Beginning Band
This is a yearlong course designed to teach the fundamentals of playing brass, woodwind or percussion instruments. There are two concerts a year where participation is required, as well as a spring music festival that students must qualify for. There are no auditions for the 6th or 7th grade beginning band; however the band directors will assist in selecting a band instrument.
Ensemble Fundamentals
This course is designed to more fully develop second year band members at Sam Houston. Emphasis is on continuing to build on fundamental skills learned in Beginning Band, which will enable each student to perform at a higher level. During the year, it performs at two required formal concerts, as well as a spring festival that students must qualify for. Students are encouraged to take part in self-improvement activities, such attending the Symphonic Band section rehearsals, taking private lessons, and are expected to perform at the Solo & Ensemble Contest. Students are placed in this group after completion of Beginning Band, by audition and director's consent.
Symphonic Band
This is the intermediate performing ensemble at Sam Houston. Emphasis is on further improving individual fundamentals and playing skills, which will enable each student to perform at an even higher level. It performs at interscholastic contests and formal concerts throughout the year. Time will be required outside the regular school day for section rehearsals and contests/evaluations. Students are encouraged to take part in self-improvement activities such as trying out for the All-District Band, taking private lessons, and are expected to perform at the Solo & Ensemble Contest. Students can be placed in this group after successful completion of at least one year of band, by audition and director's consent.
Jazz Band
This is an advanced extra-curricular band at Sam Houston. They perform at different events during the school year. Time will be required outside the regular school day for rehearsals, contests/evaluations, and other possible performances. Students can join this group after successful completion of at least one year of band (unless they have functional piano, guitar, or bass guitar experience), and by director's consent. Students learn to improvise on their own and play all styles of popular music.
Wind Ensemble
This is the advanced band at Sam Houston. They perform at football games, pep rallies, interscholastic contests, and formal concerts during the school year. Time will be required outside the regular school day for section rehearsals, contests/evaluations, and other possible performances. Attendance is required at all performances. Students are expected to prepare themselves for All-District and All-Region Band auditions, as well as performing at Solo & Ensemble Contest. They are also encouraged to take private lessons. Students can be placed in this group after successful completion of at least one year of band, by audition and director's consent.
